KETTLEWORX QUESTION AND ANSWER…Don’t underestimate what you can accomplish with a “small” weight!

Q - Hi Ryan…What weight kettlebell should an unfit woman start with? I’ve been told many different weights from different sources, ranging from 5 lbs to 35 lbs! I’m 5′5, 220 lbs and struggle with 15 minutes on an elliptical cardio machine.

A - Hi Melissa,

Great question! I highly recommend that KettleWorx trainees at any level work with a kettlebell weight that allows them to complete the number of sets and repetitions for each KettleWorx DVD, and not more or less. If a beginner starts with a 35lb KB as suggested to you, it is most likely too heavy and you may injure yourself. Start with a 5lb KB and as your ability to perform repetitions during each KettleWorx DVD increases, you can then increase your kettlebell weight. As a side note, my experience has shown me over and over again that when females use a kettlebell weight over 15lbs, their leg muscles start to get bulky. As a general rule to keep female muscle Firm and Lean while following my KettleWorx routines, stick to using a 5lb-15lb KettleBell.

Remember Madonna never uses over 5lb weights.

I was hurriedly making my way through the Toronto airport in high-heeled boots wearing a black and white short Kimono style wrap-dress when a flight attendant cheerfully remarked, “Love your dress!” I smiled and said “Thanks!” and gesturing with my hand to suggest quotation marks, added “my robe” with a wink. I heard her call back, “It’s workin’ for ya!” It took only 7 little words from a stranger to go from hustling through the airport to feeling like I was floating on clouds! Seconds later my bliss was interrupted as it occurred to me, “OMG! How embarrassing, what if she really thought I was wearing my robe?!” I wanted to shout, “I’m kidding!” It’s an inside joke! (The first time I pulled it off the rack my not-so-fashion-savvy husband commented unenthusiastically “looks like a robe.”) If the flight attendant had been closer, I would have felt compelled to explain this to her. But it gave me the opportunity to consider, “Does it really matter?” In fact, I got to thinking it would have actually been even better if it really WAS a robe! How cool would it be to ‘rock a robe’ to the point people complimented your ‘dress’! It’s funny how I almost ruined the moment by second-guessing and being worried about being embarrassed.

Sometimes people give me a funny look when I take my Celtic Sea Salt on trips with me, or drink my VegeGreens or tote my kettlebell on vacation. But the small ways I’ve come to value my health through fitness and clean eating is important to me. When it comes to my health, I’ve gotten over being embarrassed about embracing healthy eating and uncommon fitness habits. I’m from MN where people are known for being too nice to tell you they don’t like something. Instead they say, “that’s different.” I encourage you to be true to yourself even if it means being different. I’ve discovered there is “different” and then there’s “different, in a good way.”

If I’d ditched my funky dress based on my husband’s lackluster first impression, I’d have missed out on some fun compliments! Especially the one that came when I got to customs and the officer playfully called out to me, “Supermodels right this way!” OK, gotta love that one! Floating on Cloud 9 right about now. How funny, I mean really, have you seen the crazy get-ups those super models wear?

OMG! Do you think he thought I was wearing my robe?! Oh well! If so, even better! ;-

I am a wife and a mother of two. Last year I made the decision to change my life. I tipped the scales at 183 pounds and I looked and felt very unhealthy.

As soon as I started to do the KettleWorx Workouts, I began to lose weight at a much quicker pace and to tone up my whole body. The parts of my body that I hated the most have begun to look the best! My arms are no longer flabby, and the huge belly I had is almost completely flat now!

The best part about doing KettleWorx is that now I have lots of energy! I now wake up every morning refreshed and not groggy. I have also stopped spending most of the day on my couch watching television and constantly eating and have begun to reclaim my life.

I am now 40 years old and I can honestly say that I have never felt better! Since losing the weight, I play with my children more, take better care of my home, and I feel genuinely happy.

KettleWorx has enabled me to feel vibrant again and to actually enjoy taking care of myself. It feels wonderful to know that I am setting a better example for my son and daughter and taking better care of my family now!

Thanks to KettleWorx I am only 13 lbs away from my goal weight of 145 lbs. Now that I have a great time working out and consistent results I know without a doubt that I will achieve it!
